Day 7: I Can’t Catch to Save my Life

Tomorrow I don’t have to play until 3:00! That’s a new feeling….since the beginning of the week. Honestly, I hadn’t stopped to think just how much I have done this week. It didn’t occur to me until I was walking out from the dining hall today at lunch, that goshI’m really tired. Not, I want to go to bed tired, or my mind is just overwhelmed now. Just plain I’m really wholly and thoroughly tired. Having a change of pace this weekend should prove to remedy that situation, at least in part. Tomorrow, we’ll have a clinic on performance psychology instead of a morning rehearsal, and then Sunday is a full day off.

At the end of the day, the RAs had us all walk out to one of the fields for an evening of relays and other fun games. They were relays, but they were fine. I enjoyed myself, mostly because there are some really REALLY cool people to hang out with here. I’m still just trying to take in all the awesomeness everyone exudes. I mean, it’s one thing that they are some of the best teenage musicians in the nation, but they are really nice too, and (for the most part), really humble. At the same time, I learned a hard lesson tonight. I SUCK at water balloon tosses. Seriously, I dropped it on the first throw. Seriously. I got a bit better, but then I got a balloon straight to the face. That was fun.

One other fun nugget from tonight was seeing the rough edit of our section video. It was everything we were hoping and more. Honestly, the video team from Carnegie Hall is genius. The whole percussion section couldn’t stop laughing after we watched it. Twice. Hopefully I’ll be able to share it after Saturday night when the whole orchestra will see all of the final videos.

Two quick bits of housekeeping:

1. I posted on Facebook about a live stream that actually isn’t happening. There will quite likely be a chance for you to hear the orchestra play on a From the Top program through your local public radio station, and I will have details concerning airing times soonly.

2. I did get confirmation that the Carnegie Hall performance will be live streamed! WOO! That concert is, as far as I know, Tuesday, July 22nd, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. As soon as I have more details concerning that performance, I will let everyone here know.

For now, I’ll just leave you with a very fine panorama from this afternoon’s rehearsal.
